In Character Information
character name: Sanosuke Sagara
Fandom: Rurouni Kenshin
Timeline: near the end of Volume 26, after food and hearing about Kaoru & Enishi from Megumi – Chapter 235, page 145.
character's age: 19
powers, skills, pets and equipment: Sanosuke is a normal human with no crazy super powers.
In terms of skills, Sano is noted for having an incredible amount of stamina. Kaoru first brought this up during the fight between him and Kenshin, as he takes several blows from Kenshin’s sword but doesn’t fall. Over the course of the series, his stamina has increased quite a bit and it takes a lot to knock him down... but he’s human and so there’s a limit to how much he can withstand before he’s out. There’s even a point where he takes the iron ball from a ball and chain to the head… and it doesn’t even faze him.
Physical strength is another of his notable skills. He’s first seen hauling a massive polearm that’s supposedly said to weigh as much as 90 pounds, and he carries it one handed, swinging it around like it’s not much more than a stick. He’s also earned a reputation as a fighter for hire, and takes a man out of the fight with a flick of his finger. In that same encounter, he took a hidden dagger to the forehead and came out unscathed while the attacker had a broken hand. He’s actually one of the stronger characters in the series, fighting wise, though his battles against stronger opponents are usually won due to the fact that people tend to underestimate him since he runs his mouth a lot and tends to charge straight in.
As stated above, he’s made a rep for himself as a fighter for hire and specializes in hand to hand combat, using his strength, speed, and stamina to his advantage. There is one small thing he’s severely neglected, though: defense. He doesn’t think he needs it because it’s “not his style”.
His biggest and most noteworthy skills, however are the Futae no Kiwami and Sanjuu no Kiwami. The Futae no Kiwami is “a special art in which the user performs two hits in quick succession with any part of his body. The first hit with the proximal interphalangeal joint neutralizes the hardness of the target, then the second blow, struck with the proximal phalanx, breaks the target before it recovers from the force of the first blow.” while the Sanjuu no Kiwami is “along with the [Futae no Kiwami] he pushes open his fist creating a third strike”. He’s also got a variation of the Futae no Kiwami in which both hands are used, but it’s only to lessen the strain on his right hand... because it’s the only hand he’s able to use the technique with. He tends to overuse it a lot, so his right hand is usually injured to some degree. The boy just can’t let it heal. TL;DR, Sano can pulverize objects with his fist... but only the right one and he overdoes it a lot, which is why it’s usually broken.
canon history: Back before there was Sanosuke Sagara, there was Sanosuke Higashidani, the oldest son of Kamishimoemon and Naname. Thankfully, he changed his name later, because dear god, "Sanosuke Higashidani" is a mouthful... but at least it's not the "you will choke on this" that is his father's name. He lived with his parents and younger sister Uki in the area of Shinshuu, where they farmed radishes and struggled to make ends meet, until he was about nine years old, when the Sekihoutai came through. Entranced by the group, Sanosuke ran away from home and threw away his family name to follow Captain Souzou Sagara and his men.
The Sekihoutai became like a family to him, with Captain Sagara in the role of both father and idol. Following behind on the Captain’s heels with another boy, Katsu, they traveled the countryside to spread the word of lowered taxes promised by the Isshin Shishi. This was not to be, however, and because the Ishin Shishi couldn’t afford to follow through with that promise, they branded the Sekihoutai a fake government army and had them killed. Katsu and Sanosuke survived, thanks to Captain Sagara’s selfless actions, sacrificing himself to keep their pursuers from going after the boys.
Unsure of whether or not anybody else had survived, alone and afraid, Sanosuke was left to find his own way out of the forest and back to town. There, he found that the Isshin Shishi were spreading the stories of the Sekihoutai’s defeat and had the head of Captain Sagara on display as a warning to those who would oppose the government. This upset and enraged the boy, who would grow up harboring a strong hatred and distrust for anyone or anything associated with the Isshin Shishi.
Ten years later, Sanosuke had made a name for himself as “Zanza", a fighter for hire. It was through that reputation that he was hired by Gohei Hiruma to take down the legendary champion of the Isshin Shishi, the Hitokiri Battousai, Kenshin Himura. Needless to say, he was defeated, but it sparked what became one of the strongest bonds in Sano’s life as he found himself drawn to the former hitokiri-turned-rurouni.
His encounter with Kenshin convinced him to let go of the fighter for hire status, which in turn left him unemployed and something of a drifter, but he didn’t seem to mind. He tended to show up at the Kamiya dojo and mooch off of Kaoru’s kindness, and his tab at the Akebeko was probably quite impressive. Despite all this, Sanosuke proved to be a good ally and friend.
After he hooked up with Kenshin and crew, the bad things that followed Kenshin around started showing up and dragging Sanosuke into them, starting with Jin-eh, a rogue hitokiri-turned-assassin. After Jin-eh came the opium ring led by Kanryu (and they picked up a friend in the doctor, Megumi) and the Aoshi Shinomori’s Oniwabanshu, then Raijuta... and in all of these, Sanosuke played support while Kenshin took the forefront.
And then came his run-in with none other than Katsu, his old friend from the Sekihoutai. While Sano’s intention was to catch up, Katsu was planning to rebuild the Sekihoutai and attack the government buildings using a multitude of bombs he had designed and stockpiled during the ten years after the Sekihoutai’s destruction. Katsu proposed that Sano join him, and while he didn’t show much interest, he later decided to do just that. And so he hosted a party at the Kamiya dojo (unbeknownst to them, it was supposedly a “farewell” party for himself), and when everyone was sound asleep (or so he thought) he set out with Katsu to set the plan in motion.
The Central Office of the Bureau of the Interior was assaulted with bombs and Katsu & Sano managed to get past the guards and into the grounds itself, though Sano stopped when they reached the wall. On the other side stood Kenshin. Katsu, infuriated by this, attacked with bombs, but was easily beaten. It didn’t deter him, and he tried again, only to have Sano stop him with a fist to the gut. Later, Sano told Katsu that had they actually succeeded, the Sekihoutai really would have been that “fake government army”.
After all of this, Hajime Saito came to town... and Sano was beaten and left in the dojo with a broken blade through his shoulder as a “calling card” of sorts for Kenshin and crew to find. He wound up spending several days unconscious, only to come around in the middle of a rather vicious fight between Kenshin and Saito. And then the Shishio affair happened.
Angry that he was left behind, Sano was in a bad mood and took it out on everyone and everything. He borrowed money from Katsu, who also gave him small handheld bombs (grenades), and on the way out, ran into Saito... again. Who again beat him up by exploiting Sano’s weak point: a lack of any sort of defensive technique. It didn’t deter him from wanting to follow Kenshin to Kyoto, though, but he made a promise to himself that by the time he got there, he would be stronger than he already was.
On the road to Kyoto, he engaged in massive deforestation (he was literally punching and kicking down trees) and got completely lost.
And then he met Anji.
After witnessing the man performing a technique the likes of which Sano had never seen before and learning that it wasn’t some sort of Buddhist monk skill but something that anybody could learn, he more or less insisted that Anji teach him to use it. Anji’s requirement was that Sano master it in a month or die. Sano decided to up the stakes... and said he could do it in a week, and if he failed, he’d gladly die. Keep in mind, this technique is the product of 10 years of hard training (:|a Now where have we heard that one before? Oh, right, Bleach and bankai.).
By the night of the sixth day, he still hadn’t figured it out. On the verge of collapse, he made one last attempt to get up, but weakened by exhaustion, he couldn’t move. And that was when the ghost of Captain Souzou Sagara appeared before him, telling him to forget all that nonsense and rest. Sano, however, insisted that he couldn’t follow that order. He had made a promise to himself that he would do everything he could to keep people from having to suffer from unjust violence as he had in his childhood, and he intended to keep it... but regardless, he was grateful to have been able to see the Commander one last time.
Morning found Sano collapsed on a rock. As Anji was getting ready to say a memorial service, the boy woke, proving that he wasn’t dead... and then further proving that he had figured out the secret behind the technique. He had learned the Futae no Kiwami.
In parting, Anji gave his name and directions to Kyoto, and Sano couldn’t help but laugh when he realized that the reason he’d seen the Captain’s ghost -and the reason the forest had seemed familiar- was because it was that same forest in which the Sekihoutai had met their end.
Sano's arrival in Kyoto began with a jail cell. In order to find where Saito was (and thus Kenshin), he decided to get himself arrested, since Saito was as a policeman. When Saito didn't seem interested in Sano's presence, Sano took it upon himself to destroy the cell door and followed him to a solitary cell in which one of Shishio's men was imprisoned. The two of them got off to a bad start with insults (leading to Sano being the Rooster Head and the other man a Broom), but eventually they got the info they wanted, with Sano being used as Saito's ashtray at one point.
He eventually met up with Kenshin and used the bombs given to him by Katsu to take out Shishio’s ship, the Rengoku.Later, he set off with Kenshin and Saito to face Shishio’s Juppongatana... and wound up fighting none other than Anji. And they beat the shit out of each other. And Sano “borrowed” Anji’s defensive strategy for the Futae no Kiwame, the Futae Hazushi (which is basically hitting yourself with it when you get hit by it to negate the effect). Anji still wasn’t down, though, and they heard about his sad past during the Buddhist hunts, and then they beat on each other again, each long surpassing the limits of their bodies and fighting on pure willpower. Finally, Sano beat Anji via the creation of the Sanjuu no Kiwami... and then fell over. Kenshin tended his injuries and they set out once again to the next opponent... and beyond... none of whom would have anything at all to do with Sanosuke. He attempted to help in the fight against Shishio, but got knocked down after one blow. Sano came to not long after Kenshin did, and witnessed the final fight between Kenshin and Shishio in which Shishio overheated and literally burst into flame, his body unable to handle the heat. Together with Aoshi, Sano and Kenshin escaped thanks to Saito, who remained behind.
The day before they left Kyoto, Sano went back to the place where the battles had taken place, looking to “finish” his fight with Saito by laying it to rest and using it as a stepping stone for bettering himself. The group then returned to Tokyo.
Back in Tokyo, Sano went to see Megumi about tending to his injured hand, then later, the group got together at the Akabeko for a “Welcome Back” dinner. Afterward, Sano conned Kenshin into talking to him about things instead of keeping everything all bottled up. That night on the way home, a large blast destroyed the Akabeko, coming from the direction of Mt. Ueno. Sano, Yahiko, and Kenshin rushed to the site, but only Sano and Kenshin made it, with little Yahiko stuck puking in a ditch back in the city. The conclusion by the police was that it was a test or misfire by dissatisfied samurai, but Sano and Kenshin knew better and talked at length on what to do about potential upcoming threats, only to have Kaoru enter. Sano used the excuse of “looking for places to hit up in the Pleasure Districts” to throw her off and make her lose interest, but she was still suspicious. When the attacks finally came, it was one that split up Sano and Kenshin’s attention, dividing them in a two-pronged attack, with Sanosuke taking on the attacker at the Maekawa Dojo while Kenshin went to tend to the Police Chief.
After provoking his opponent, Sano realized he couldn’t use his right hand due to injury and wound up taking a foot to the face. That set things off pretty badly, since Sano’s attacks weren’t getting through and he had no defense. The armor the other guy wore was proving to be a bigger problem than originally expected. Even so, he still managed to get to his feet and keep going... by doing exactly what he knew he wasn’t supposed to and using his right fist -and the Futae no Kiwami. It worked, but the rebound damaged his hand yet again.
He returned to the Kamiya Dojo with his arm in a sling, Megumi at his side. He made a small slip in his wording, though, which immediately had people asking what he knew. When Kenshin returned, Sano was present in the dojo when the tale unfolded as to what was going on and why. That night, as he sat watch, he told Yahiko that whatever happened, don’t interrupt the fight between Kenshin and Enishi -that it was a battle for pride and for personal reasons, so to interrupt it would make it all meaningless.
When the time for battle came, fireworks lit up the night sky, interspersed with hot air balloons containing Enishi and his crew. Sano helped launch Kenshin toward the initial attack by sending him off with his right hand. When the guy made a second attack with the cannon, Sanosuke was ready, with a weapon of his own: that massive zanbatou/polearm from his initial appearance. Using that as a ‘bat’, he sent the cannonball back toward the attacker and Kenshin was able to keep him from reloading.
A second face off with the armor-plated guy from the Maekawa Dojo shattered the rest of the zanbatou, but did nothing to the armor. Sano was getting one hell of a beating, to which Kenshin said “If [death] were to happen, then Sagara Sanosuke would be forever known as a man from the beginning to the very end”. Those words, as noted by Yahiko, only applied to Sano, since Sano was the only one who fought alongside Kenshin. One kick to the face, and the other guy’s nose was bloodied, but even so, he was still not in good shape. Thrown through the dojo wall, Sanosuke insisted on using the Futae no Kiwami, despite Megumi’s words that if he did, it could well shatter his hand. It won him the fight. The result, however, left him in a pretty sorry state, and he was unable to do anything but sit and watch as the other battles raged around him.
And then Kaoru was killed in the ensuing chaos and Kenshin disappeared. It was up to Sanosuke to bring him back, but there was nothing he could do. In the end, he punched him in the face and left.
Sano didn’t make a reappearance in Tokyo, instead going to the post town area of Shinshuu, fighting against the country Yakuza who set him off. The fighter for hire, Zanza, was back... sort of. His first real opponent turned out to be none other than Gohei Hiruma, who had hired him to fight Kenshin half a year earlier, and the fight took only seconds to finish. It didn’t escape notice from a certain young girl in the crowd, though, who promptly latched onto him despite his disinterest. When he insulted her little brother who she had told to hide, that was the end of their encounter.
At the end of the night, Fudosawa (Mr. M according to Sano), who had hired on Hiruma, came to talk to Sano about taking care of a little problem. Mr. M wanted to control the town and the silk trade that passed through it, but that little girl’s father posed a threat to his control, and he wanted Sano to take care of it. And so Sano took the job. When he finally met up with the “problem” Mr. M faced, he was in for a real treat.
The “problem" was none other than Kamishimoemon Higashidani, his father.
However, instead of fighting as family members, they look at it as fighting someone with similar names, and end up coming to a draw. While recovering on the ground, Sano learned that the radish farm he had known was all but dead, and his family would have to make straw hats to get by. The information he got from his dad was that of an Isshin Shishi supporting Mr. M, and that Kamishimoemon was standing up for all of the people in the town, not just himself -all of those who could afford to feed their families thanks to the post town.
The following morning, Sano ran into Kamishimoemon and his family... whom which he was invited to dinner with since he’d helped the daughter (Uki) out the other day. While they were eating, though, there was a ruckus outside and Sano went to check it out, only to get sucked into the fight brewing between Kamishimoemon, Mr. M, and the Isshin Shishi. He recognized the Ishin Shishi right away, as the “Fatty Pig” from the Jin-eh affair. The men didn’t attack, but retreated instead, and Kamishimoemon took his family -and Sano- home. There, he heard about what happened to his mother, Naname, who had taken ill after Outa was born and died 2 years ago.
Everything seemed to be going well, until Uki came to Sano upset that her dad was missing. Kamishimoemon had gone off to fight the Isshin Shishi on his own. He couldn’t let Kamishimoemon be taken from his family by making an enemy of the Isshin Shishi, but he, who had no real home and hated the Ishin Shishi, was more than willing to take them on. And so he gave Kamishimoemon a cheap shot to take him down quick, then went off to the fight.
And so Sano took on Mr. M, a former Sumo wrestler. It took 3 hits to take down Mr. M, and then he was met head on by a pack of 200 men. And he beat every single one without killing any of them. The trip back was enlightening, as Sano came to the decision that he needed neither a home to return to nor people to protect, only the Aku on his back. As they parted ways, Sano woke the sleeping Outa and told him that when he got older, he should go to Tokyo and seek out the Kamiya Dojo so that he could get stronger.
Before he could leave the area, though, he made it a point to stop in to see the Fatty Pig and beat him badly enough that the next morning, the whole town was talking about him and the Fatty Pig was left swathed in bandages, going “Fear the evil”. And thus, he returned to Tokyo... to seek out Megumi to repair his hand.
...which wound up in a massive cast on which she wrote “DO NOT USE” in large kanji so that he wouldn’t forget. While he was at the clinic, Megumi caught him up on everything that was going on, though the most important pieces were that Kenshin had returned... and that Kaoru was in fact alive. Her death had been nothing more than an elaborate ruse painted by Enishi to break down Kenshin’s spirit. They would have to wait until Kenshin was fully recovered from his own ordeals, though, before they set out to stop Enishi and bring Kaoru home.
personality: At 19, Sano is young. He’s also never really had any sort of formal schooling, so while he can read and write, anything really in depth is beyond him. In canon, there are several times where he’s referred to by others as an idiot. This is because he really doesn’t think a lot of the time. He doesn’t really know how to “read” his opponents, and in terms of his fighting, he’s actually rather weak when looked at in comparison to the others in the cast such as Kenshin or Saito... but within that group, he’s probably the 4th strongest (Kenshin, then either Saito or Aoshi, then the other of them, then Sano). He was a child during the Bakumatsu, so he’s never really experienced fighting quite like the others did. And now I get to elaborate! Oh joy!
Sanosuke is incredibly loyal to his friends... and we’re not talking “I would die for you”, we’re talking “I will literally follow your ass to the ends of the Earth (or Kyoto, whichever comes first), get REALLY lost, damn near kill myself, beat the shit out of a whole host of people and get just as beat up in the process, and STILL keep following you, but not die for you because SOMEBODY has to look out for you”. A threat to his friends, in any semblance of the word, will bring him down on the threatener, and if an attempt is made on their life? Let’s just hope the person happens to be stronger or have more stamina than Sano.
His loyalty also extends fully to the Sekihoutai, of which he was a part and considered to be his family. Badmouthing them, even after so long, is a good way to get beaten. He has no love of tyrannical rule or governments who don’t practice what they preach, as he grew up during the Bakumatsu and the rise of the Isshin Shishi who threw the Sekihoutai to the wolves and branded them traitors despite the fact that they were only doing as the government asked -it wasn’t their fault the government couldn’t make good on the promises. In a nutshell, he really hates the Meiji government.
Speaking of the Sekihoutai… on the back of Sanosuke’s jacket is the kanji “Aku” (“evil”). It was with this that the Sekihoutai were essentially branded, and the kanji serves as both a symbol of his loyalty to the group as well as a personal reminder of what it is he’s fighting for: to stand up and defend those innocents who were wronged so they don’t suffer like he did. (Yes, he’s another “PROTECT ALL THINGS!” guy. I’m partial to them for some reason.) It’s this that he references when he “buys” the fight against the Isshin Shishi from his father during his brief time back in Shinshuu.
There are many times when others in the cast refer him to as an idiot, especially Saito, but it’s more to the point that in comparison to the others, he really doesn’t have much by way of education, nor does he care. He was a farmer’s son who ran away at the age of nine and spent the years after the Sekihoutai raising himself on the streets, which doesn’t leave much time for learning. He can read and write, can do basic math (we’re talking addition and subtraction here, nothing more complicated), and has a basic idea of how the world works. He’s also grown up in a time of tremendous upheaval and change –the rise and first few years of the Meiji era after the fall of the Tokugawa- so he’s going from a rather sheltered life on a farm to Edo’s rapidly modernizing state. As someone who lives in a rather carefree manner and has little to no real knowledge of “what’s going on”, of course he won’t be too bright about things. Old habits are hard to break, and Sanosuke has plenty of bad ones.
Gambling houses and drinking establishments are places he frequents, as is the Akabeko, but he never has much by way of money so he has quite the tab going. He’s a mooch as well, often hanging around the Kamiya Dojo at mealtimes, since Kaoru seems to have the inability to turn people away. Since he quit playing the fighter for hire, his income is virtually nil, so he’ll try and talk others into either picking up the check or he’ll put it on his tab… that he can’t afford to pay off. His luck with gambling is also pretty lousy, and he tends to lose more than he makes.
Sano does tend to use honorifics with people whose names he knows or who he respects so long as they aren’t friends (or enemies), and he’ll give nicknames to just about everyone else (ie. Kenshin is just Kenshin, Kaoru is Jo-chan, the police chief has an honorific, and Saito is usually some derogatory form of “you” with a random expletive thrown in.) He also swears. A lot.
Because he’s not the main character, there isn’t a lot of time spent on him in terms of expanding on him. We get the glimpse of his time with the Sekihoutai in Volume 6 over the ordeal with Katsu, the prints, and Katsu’s failed plan to take down the Meiji, then there’s the brief time he spends in Shinshuu where we see his father and siblings in Volume 26. These moments are where everything that’s been said about him comes to light.
He hates the Meiji government… but doesn’t agree with Katsu’s methods to take it down by force, especially because Katsu wanted to use the name of the Sekihoutai to do it. He’s willing to put family, friendships, and even his life on the line to ensure those he cares about are safe. He may not be the brightest crayon in the box, but he does possess common sense and he can be taught. He tells his father that it’s okay for a drifter to risk losing everything instead of a man with a place to call home because the drifter has nothing to lose whereas the man with a home has everything, which is why he “buys” the fight –he doesn’t want Uki and Outa to suffer the loss of their father after having lost their mother, and after Uki “lost” her older brother as well. Knowing full well that he would get into trouble beyond what he’d been involved in before, he took on an Isshin Shishi, beating the man to the point where he needed to be hospitalized, in order to save the Shinshuu area from being subverted for the Meiji.

Anyway, the police are going tonight, aren’t they? If we don’t make it out on time, we-
[The voice is cut off in mid sentence as the door in view swings open, the doorway’s occupant standing frozen as if they just walked in on something they really weren’t supposed to see. And then he’s looking down the hallway he just came from as if the answers lie there… or an escape.]
…we’re out.
…
Yahiko? Tsubame-chan? …Fox lady?
[He sighs, left hand raking through spiky dark hair, the right wrapped in bandages. Whether it’s due to injury or not, though, is hard to tell given the other wrappings on his body.]
Oh, come on!
[He steps into the room, which is probably a bad move on his part, just before a breeze from the hallway causes the door to close, clicking into place behind him. That click makes him turn sharply to bang against the door with his fist.]
O-Oi! This isn’t funny, guys! We don’t got a lo- YOU ARE NOT LEAVING ME BEHIND, DAMMIT!
[Eventually the feed times out to the sights and sounds of door abuse and yelling.]
Third Person Sample: “Anyway, the police are going tonight, aren’t they? If we don’t make it out on time, we-”
The door swung open to a room he didn’t recognize. Was this really the clinic? And wasn’t this supposed to be Kenshin’s room? What was going on? It was the silence that caught his attention next as he stood there in the doorway. When he’d started down the hall, he’d been with Tsubame, Yahiko, and Megumi… but it was quiet now. Too quiet.
“…we’re out.”
He leaned backward to scan the hallway, searching for his companions. They didn’t have time to play around! Surely they knew that, so where the hell did they go?
“Yahiko? Tsubame-chan? …Fox lady?”
Not only was he in an unfamiliar room, but now the others were nowhere to be found! It didn’t make sense. Think, Sanosuke, think! If you were them, where would you have gone? Stepping into the room as though they could be found within, he was snapped out of his thoughts by the sudden click of the door swinging shut behind him. They wouldn’t have! …would they? Would they really have locked him inside and left him behind, on account of injuries? Yahiko might, but Tsubame wouldn’t… as for Megumi, she’d probably not only lock him up somewhere, but she’d throw away the key if it meant he didn’t come back for repairs later.
Yeeeah, that was something he’d have to work on, but it was best left for a later date. Right now, there was something more important to focus on.
“O-Oi! This isn’t funny, guys! We don’t got a lo- YOU ARE NOT LEAVING ME BEHIND, DAMMIT”
Important things such as pounding on the door in hopes that they were still outside. Sure, he could easily destroy it, but he didn’t want to give Megumi any more reason to take the kids and Kenshin and high tail it out without him.
Kenshin.
There was no way Kenshin would leave him. Not after everything else they’d been through… but Sano had been the one to leave on an angry note, so maybe he would? Dammit, why did this have to happen now? Why not after they’d brought Kaoru back? He was supposed to be out there helping bring her home, not stuck in a room while everyone else went to take care of things! He wasn’t so weak that a broken hand would bring him down and he’d proved that time and again in the past, so… why? They should know better than to think he’d stand for this.
He’d try pounding on the door and yelling one more time… and if that didn’t work, then it was up to brute force. If this fails, then I’m sorry, but you’ll have to fix it again. He was getting out of there, one way or another, and when he found them again, there’d be an awful lot of explaining to be done.
Anything else? Have a (chopped to show relevant parts) video of one of the better fights in the series… and something utterly derpy!
